FIRST members coordinate and/or participate in a number of regional, national and international scietific networks to guarantee excellent science and education at FIRST. All these initiatives are also dedicated to the training of groups of PhD students with the aim of building a strong and competent foundation for the next generation of scientists in biomedical and translational research.
Of particular importance for FIRST are the research training groups (Graduiertenkollegs) on the "Roles of Eicosanoids in Biology and Medicine" (GK757) and on "Research, Development and Safety of Biopharmaceutical Drugs ("Biologicals")" (GK1172, both funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The former was funded from 2001 to 2010 as European Reseach Training Group together with the Karolinska Institut in Stockholm. The GK "Biologicals" is based in the Faculty of Medicine and the Georg-Speyer-Haus and is one of the largest research training groups in Germany. Currently the majority of our PhD students are members of one of these 2 research training groups belonging to FIRST. Since July 2010, the Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung in Bad Homburg supports the Dr. Hans Kröner-Graduiertenkolleg “Eicosanoids and sphingolipid signalling pathways in inflammation, cancer and vascular diseases” with 6 PhD studentships in Frankfurt and 2 at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.
