     GK 757 Eicosanoids
     GK 1172 Biologicals

There are 5 key research areas within FIRST which are grouped in Divisions I - V. Each division comprises researches from the University of Frankfurt as well as the Georg-Speyer-Haus. In Division IV "Biologicals", there are also researchers involved from the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut in Langen (PEI), as the PEI focuses on biological medicinal products such as vaccines, medicinal products containing antibodies, allergens for therapy and diagnostics, blood and blood products, tissue and medicinal products for gene therapy, somatic cell therapy and xenogenic cell therapy.
Two research training groups (Graduiertenkollegs) funded by the DFG are incorporated into FIRST and represent a large number of our PhD students in division I and IV.
The research training group "Roles of Eicosanoids in Biology and Medicine" (GK 757, speaker Prof. Dr. Dieter Steinhilber), part of division I (Inflammation and Pain), is an international collaboration between the University of Frankfurt and the Department of Medical Chemistry at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.  The research and education program extends the realms and intensity of the collaboration which has existed to-date and is intended to make optimal use of the different but complementary experimental approaches and areas of expertise of the two institutions for the education of graduate students. Whereas the Karolinska Institute will preferentially focus on the molecular biology of eicosanoids and arachidonic acid pathways, the pharmacology of eicosanoids and questions related to their clinical relevance will be investigated in Frankfurt.
The other research training group called "Research, Development and Safety of Biopharmaceutical Drugs (Biologicals)" (GK 1172, speaker Prof. Dr. Josef Pfeilschifter) comprises most students in division IV (Biologicals). The GK 1172 brings together innovative research on biologicals, the development of therapeutic RNSa, intracellularly active proteins and gene therapy. All stages of drug R&D, from target validation to Phase I and II clinical trials, will be represented.
